Like most people who read about this story, I immediately was thinking how did she accomplish this. When I was 28, I was a recent law school grad trying to get my foot in the door with corporate America. At the end of the day, the best thing about her story is that she was able to create a business that allows her to live the life she wants.
Normally when you think about freelancers, you think about two different kinds of people. The first person is a jack of all trades, part-time dog-walker, part-time Uber driver, and an underemployed professional who can't yet support themselves fully in their field. The second type of person you think about is a semi-retired seasoned professional who freelances to keep boredom at bay because they made crazy amounts of money in their past career.
The freelancer at the heart of this story is Alex Fasulo, a freelance writer who gets almost all her work off of the site Fiver. By charging her clients $1,000 for a 10,000-word e-book; Alex can generate over $15,000 a month by working on two or three projects a week. In May of 2020, she was able to make $36,000. That is more money than some Americans make within a year after working a full-time job.
What can the rest of us learn from this?
Even though the pandemic caused a lot of companies to close, it did create new opportunities as more people aimed to create online businesses in record numbers. Alex was able to tap into one of Fiver's highest paying niches and create her own business. Also, one thing to highlight, is that Alex didn't need to create a tech company and get outside funding to build wealth for herself. She focused on creating high-value products for her targeted niche and it paid off. If Alex ever makes a master on succeeding on Fiver, I'm definitely signing up.
